Who it is for
The course is written for adults who use email, online banking, social media and a phone, and who would rather understand how scams work than be told to be careful. It is written with people over 60 in mind, and for the sons and daughters who send it to them.
It assumes nothing technical. There is no jargon to learn, no software to install and no test to pass. Each screen makes one point, and you move on when you are ready.
If you are an adult child, it also works as the thing you do together. Sit with a parent for the first chapter, then let them carry on at their own pace.
The six chapters
The course is one connected story. By the end you can say: I understand the modern scam landscape, I know why scams work on normal people, I have one reliable defense, I can spot the signs that repeat, I have habits that make me a harder target, and I know what to do if something happens.
Scams have had an upgrade. Voice cloning, convincing fakes and professional operations mean that if something looks real and sounds real, that no longer means it is. This chapter shows what modern fraud actually looks like, what scammers are after, and why a little training goes a long way.
In this chapter
- Scams used to be obvious
- Not anymore
- Scammers have gone pro
- Why do they do it?
- Because it works
- What are scammers after?
- Different stories, same goals
- Not just financial
- The hidden emotional toll
- The good news?
- A little training goes a long way
- Your defense system

Rules to remember
The summary screen from the same chapter.
- 1No real emergency needs you to act in the next five minutes.Time is always on your side. If it's real, it will still be there after you've checked.
- 2If you didn't start it, you don't owe it anything.Unsolicited contact hasn't earned your trust, your time, or your personal info.
- 3Anyone who discourages checking is telling on themselves.Real companies and trustworthy people will never discourage you from verifying independently.
How it is built
One idea per screen
Short screens, large text and one point at a time. Nothing scrolls off the edge and nothing is timed.
Real people, real scams
Peter, Margaret, Sarah and Diane are composites of real cases. Their stories carry the lesson so the advice has somewhere to land.
Practice, not just reading
Interactive exercises throughout: spot the red flags in an email, choose the safe way to verify, decide what to do next. You answer before you are told.
No shame, no fear
Scams work on everyone. The course explains why, then builds confidence. It never talks down to the learner and never tries to frighten them.
Built on behavioral science
The content follows how influence and manipulation actually work, and was designed by cybersecurity professionals who build security awareness programs for organizations.
Localized for four countries
Examples, banks, phone numbers, currencies and reporting routes are adapted for the UK, US, Canada and Australia.
After the course
The course is the foundation. Everything else in GranGuard exists so the habit it teaches, pause and verify, has somewhere to go.
